June 10 | Weekly Recap

kingslayer-invitational-season-2

Every new week at Kingslayer Games means a new week of grinding points and a new week of competition. Every Monday we will review the previous week and spotlight one or more decks.

Standings are updated at blog.kingslayergames.com/standings-season-2 every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

If you go undefeated at an event, let a Staff member know and they can take a picture of your decklist for the recap.

Monday Standard

Tiago Marreiros runs it back in Standard with his aggressive take on Orzhov Knights, winning the tiebreaker sweat for first place. No undefeated player in Standard this Monday, as some crucial pair-down matches were lost by the higher ranked player. Standard newcomer Nicholas Lee pilots his take on Grixis Bolas to a 3-1 finish as well.

Player Deck Record Points
Tiago Marreiros Orzhov Knights 3-1 3
Ryan Sanders 5 Color Dreadhorde 3-1 3
Nicholas Lee Grixis Control 3-1 3

Monday Legacy

A recurring theme on most Legacy Mondays, Chris Tolar takes down Legacy this week with a Karn, the Great Creator driven Cloudpost deck, utilizing the fast mana for Legacy to quickly bury opponents. He fought through a stacked field, before ultimately taking down AJ Schremp’s Mono Blue Delver deck in the finals.

Player Deck Record Points
Chris Tolar 12 Post 3-0 3
AJ Schremp Mono Blue Delver 2-1 2
Mitchell Nguyen Jeskai Stoneblade 2-1 2
Carlos Hernandez Pox 2-1 2

Tuesday Modern

Modern continues to be on the menu, as players get in the last few tournaments with their current Modern decks prior to the release of Modern Horizons. Ultimately, there was no undefeated player yet again, as the right sequence of events resulted in a suite of 3-1 players. Tony Boozan’s tiebreakers were the best, and his Izzet Phoenix deck rose once again to the top.

Player Deck Record Points
Tony Boozan Izzet Phoenix 3-1 3
Andrew Farris Humans 3-1 3
Ryan Sanders Mill 3-1 3
AJ Schremp Tron 3-1 3

Midweek Standard

War of the Spark brought with it  one of the most diverse and interesting Standard formats in recent memory, and testing duo Andrew Goodwin and Dylan Feeman split the finals of Midweek Standard. Andrew navigated through a minefield of Mono Red on his way to the top, while Dylan’s Charging Monstrosaurs took down Esper Midrange in a pivotal Round 3. We’ve chosen to feature Andrew’s decklist this week, which you can check out in the section below.

Player Deck Record Points
Andrew Goodwin Selesnya Tokens 3-0-1 3
Dylan Feeman Izzet Phoenix 3-0-1 3
Jason Jahromi 4 Color Dreadhorde 3-1 3
CJ Sholtis Bant Midrange 3-1 3

Thursday Modern

A large Modern crowd descended upon Fountain Valley this Thursday, but ultimately it would be both AJ’s and Dylan’s second finals appearances of the week. Dylan and AJ split the finals, with AJ’s innovative Heartless Summoning deck fighting through a mana denial heavy field, while Dylan’s Azorius Control won tough nailbiters against Humans, Arclight Phoenix, and Tron before making back to back finals. We’ll see if Dylan can split the finals of his third event in a row on next week’s Weekly Recap. You can check out Dylan’s decklist in the featured section below.

Player Deck Record Points
AJ Schremp Heartless Summoning 3-0-1 3
Dylan Feeman Azorius Control 3-0-1 3
Ryan Sanders Mill 3-1 3

Friday Standard

An aggressive metagame marked a shift from the grindy midrange driven metagame of prior events this week, as Jonathan Galbraith’s Mono Red deck took down FNM, triumphing over white aggressive decks.

Player Deck Record Points
Jonathan Galbraith Mono Red 4-0 4
Ryan Carpenter Azorius Aggro 3-1 3
Jonathan Calderon Abzan Midrange 3-1 3

Friday Modern

Proving itself a successful addition to our FNM lineup, Modern FNM saw Ryan Sanders rising to the top with his trusty Mill deck. Sanders fought through a vulnerable field, filled with Big Mana decks like Scapeshift or Amulet Titan — traditionally positive matchups for Mill.

Player Deck Record Points
Ryan Sanders Mill 3-0 3
Anthony Garcia Amulet Karn 2-1 2
Sam Lewis Mono Red Phoenix 2-1 2
Thien Phung Temur Scapeshift 2-1 2
