April 22 Weekly Recap

kingslayer invitational season 2

Every new week at Kingslayer Games means a new week of grinding points and a new week of competition. Every Monday we will review the previous week and spotlight one or more decks.

Standings are updated at blog.kingslayergames.com/standings-season-2 every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

If you go undefeated at an event, let a Staff member know and they can take a picture of your decklist for the recap.

In preparation for War of the Spark, we’re trying something different the next two weeks. We are offering Future Standard (proxies allowed) on Mondays and Wednesdays until War of the Spark releases. You can check out the event here or by clicking the picture above.

Monday Legacy

A full roster of Legacy players showed up on Monday, with Kevin Kiang demonstrating the power of Stoneforge Mystic. Kevin is no stranger to the Kingslayer Spotlight, as he’s won many of our legacy weeklies before. Reanimator specialist Chase Chappell took down crowd favorite Chris Tolar on his way to a 3-1 finish.

Player Deck Record Points
Kevin Kiang Stoneblade 4-0 4
Kourosh Alizadeh Miracles 3-1 3
Tinac Xing Stoneblade 3-1 3
Chase Chappell Reanimator 3-1 3

Tuesday Modern

Modern proves as popular a format as ever, and J returns to the scene with a brutal 4-0 finish with traditional Affinity. Notably absent from the 3-1 bracket, Thien Phung won his pair-up match, taking down Tony Boozan in the final round, in satisfactory dream-crusher style.

Player Deck Record Points
J Burley Affinity 4-0 4
Joshua Yuan Hollow One 3-1 3
Thien Phung Dreamcrusher 2-2 2

Thursday Modern

Nearly 30 players showcased the success of Magic’s nonrotating format of choice, and two players rose above the rest with their 4-0 records. Bastion took down a bevy of linear decks with his Surgical Extraction packed Mill deck, while Andrew Farris won with his sleek take on everyone’s favorite spaghetti monsters. We’ve featured both of their decklists this week, and you can check them out in the section below.

Bastion Noah Mill 4-0 4
Andrew Farris Eldrazi and Taxes 4-0 3
Stephen Coan Bogles 3-1 3

Friday Standard

With War of the Spark incoming, a waning Standard format still populates the tables of FNM. Dave Cyril earned himself another victory on his homebrew of choice, this time a different take on Rakdos Aggro.

Erik Dowling Gruul Aggro 3-1 3
David Wallace Bant Nexus 3-1 3
Brian Schmitzer Mono Red 3-1 3

Friday Modern

A lower turnout than Thursday, Friday Modern proves to be a battle of the best of the best. With nearly every player a regular Modern grinder, Thien capitalized on this to pilot Death’s Shadow Zoo to victory against an unsuspecting field.

Player Deck Record Points
Thien Phung Death’s Shadow Zoo 4-0 4
Anthony Garcia Amulet Titan 3-1 3
Nicolas Urrea Izzet Phoenix 3-1 3

Saturday Standard

Standard Showdown has come and gone, but the players have not. Max Curd finessed his way to victory with an unconventional Standard deck. Battle of the brews is the name of the game on Saturday.

Player Deck Record Points
Max Curd Naya Dinosaurs 4-0 4
Alexander Schremp Unknown 3-1 3
Brian Schmitzer Mono Red 3-1 3
